PDMA KP and PNRA Join Hands to Strengthen Radiological Emergency Preparedness

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, led by Director General Mr. Asfandyar Khattak, held a high-level coordination meeting with the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) to enhance preparedness and response to radiological and nuclear emergencies in the province. A delegation from PNRA, headed by its Director General, Mr. Muhammad Naeem Arshad, briefed PDMA KP officials on PNRA’s core regulatory functions. The team highlighted the widespread use of radioactive sources in Pakistan's healthcare, industry, agriculture, and research sectors. The PNRA delegation also presented the National Emergency Response Plan, focusing on timely and coordinated action in case of security events involving radioactive materials. The importance of provincial-level readiness and response mechanisms was emphasised. DG PDMA Mr. Asfandyar Khattak, along with Director DRM Mr. Said Nawab and Director EOC Mr. Amjad Khan, received a detailed briefing on the need to develop localised Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and strengthen institutional preparedness. Both PNRA and PDMA agreed to implement the National Program in phases. This includes capacity building of relevant departments, development and notification of SOPs, and provision of modern radiation detection equipment. PNRA will also conduct operational training for PDMA staff and responders. Mr. Asfandyar Khattak appreciated PNRA’s regulatory role and assured full support for implementing the National Program under PDMA’s coordination. He reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to ensuring an effective and timely response to radiological incidents across the province. This collaboration marks a key step in improving disaster preparedness and reflects strong federal-provincial cooperation for public safety and nuclear risk management.
